hypoxia zone
dead zone (a very large dead spot in the ocean, e.g. the seasonally-depleted oxygen levels (<2mg/l) in the Gulf of Mexico covering 18,000 sq km (increasing each year - expected to be 22,126 sq km in 2007). Fish can swim away from such areas if onset is gradual but many invertebrates die)
